Water Polo Team, 11 Athletes Garner Academic Honors from ACWPC

June 4, 2007

TEMPE, Ariz. - Eleven members of the Arizona State University water polo program have earned a place on All-Academic teams that were released Monday by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC). As a team, the Sun Devils' overall grade point average (GPA) ranked as the 11th-highest in the nation this year as the squad carried a cumulative mark of 3.170.

The ACWPA holds three distinctions for its academic squads based upon cumulative GPAs of the student-athletes. The Sun Devils had two players earn the distinction of Outstanding (4.00-3.71 GPA) while four were named Superior (3.70-3.41) and five others were Excellent (3.40-3.20). The 11 honorees this year marks the most in a single season for the Sun Devil program, bettering the eight selections earned in both 2002 and 2003.

Ashley Bower earned her third overall selection and the second Outstanding distinction of her career (2004, 2007) to lead the team while fellow Australian Ali Gronow earned her first national academic honor as a member of the same team. Caylinn Wallace earned Superior distinction for her second career honor (Outstanding in 2005) and was joined on the team by first-time selections Bonnie Chapman, Jaron Reed and Jennifer Campo. Katie Hedley earned her second career selection and her second Excellent distinction to lead the third group that also consisted of Kari Walsh, Katy Lawlor, Kim Buck and Lindsay Williams.

Historically, the numbers of athletes selected to each team either tied or bettered the previous high the program had attained. Overall, the two Outstanding selections tied the most earned, tying with the two selections in 2002 while the four selections to the Superior distinction ties the most selections with the four honored in both 2003 and 2004. The five selections to the Excellent team marks a single-season high, bettering the three selections earned in 2005, 2003 and 2002.
