ASU Women's Soccer Falls to Arizona 2-1 in Double OT
Oct. 10, 2008 TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State women's soccer team had its seven-game unbeaten streak snapped on Friday in a 2-1 double overtime setback to Arizona. With the loss the Sun Devils fell to 6-3-3 (0-1-0 Pac-10) while the Wildcats improved to 8-4-0 (1-0-0 Pac-10). Arizona sophomore midfielder Karina Camacho scored the deciding goal in the game's 106th minute when she rebounded a missed shot by teammate Renae Cuellar. Friday's contest, which drew a season-high 1,053 fans to Sun Devil Soccer Stadium, was the Pac-10 opener for both squads. "(Conference games) mean a whole lot more because they absolutely decide who goes into the playoffs but that doesn't matter in a rivalry game," said ASU head coach Kevin Boyd. "[Rivalry games] are about passion and the desire to win and we came up short in those areas tonight and that is what is disappointing." The Sun Devils, who came into Friday's game with a 5-0-2 record in their last seven contests, got off to a good start when junior midfielder Carly Kallas connected on a header off a throw-in by teammate Jill Shoquist to give ASU a 1-0 lead at the 29-minute mark. The score would remain that way until the 81st minute when Wildcat senior London King scored off a cross from teammate Jacqueline Broussard. King's goal ended a streak of 335 scoreless minutes by ASU junior goalkeeper Briana Silvestri. For the game, the Sun Devils held a slight 18-17 edge in shots. Sophomores Alexandra Elston and Karin Volpe tied for the team with five each while Silvestri made seven saves for ASU.
The Sun Devils return to action next Friday when they host No. 2 UCLA at 7 p.m. |
