OJAI, Calif. - The 2007 Pac-10 Tennis Tournament kicked-off Thursday in Ojai, Calif., which saw the first two rounds of singles action played with Matt Brooklyn and Juan Carlos Rebaza both advancing to the Men's Championship Round quarterfinals. Play resumes tomorrow morning with doubles action starting at 10:15 a.m. and singles play resuming at 11:30 a.m.

 

On the men's side, in the singles first round, only two Sun Devils escaped as Juan Carlos Rebaza beat UCLA's Michael Look 6-4, 6-4. Matt Brooklyn followed with an easy defeat of Stanford's Eric McKean 6-0, 6-1.

 

Both Devils that made it through the first round gritted through a tough second round which found both of them successful and advancing to the quarterfinal round. Rebaza took down Arizona's Jason Labrosse 6-4, 6-2 while Brooklyn hung tough in the last match off the court on the day, finally defeating UCLA's Mathieu Dehaine 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(5).

 

The Women's team fared the same in the first round as Sabrina Capannolo and Nadia Abdala each claimed a win to advance to the second round. Capannolo took on Washington's Aleksandra Malovic, who pushed a third set, but still found Sabrina taking home a 6-1, 5-7, 6-0 win. Freshman phenom, Nadia Abdala breezed through the first round as she topped Washington's Mathilde Cor in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.  

 

The second round didn't prove as fortunate for the Sun Devils though as both Capannolo and Abdala fell, halting ASU's singles title hopes. Sabrina was unable to beat USC's Sarah Fansler, falling 7-5 and 6-2, while Stanford's Theresa Logar beat Nadia Abdala 6-1, 6-3.

 

The 2007 Pac-10 Tennis Championships continue tomorrow in Ojai with quarterfinals of singles and the start of doubles play.
