Jesper Kennegard Notches Fourth Top-Five Finish At U.S. Intercollegiate

April 20, 2008

Freshmen Jesper Kennegard continued his solid initial season with an even-par 210 (71-72-67) at the U.S. Intercollegiate held at Stanford Golf Course. He fired a 3-under 67 in the final round Sunday to tie for fifth. ASU finished sixth in the 17-team field at 32-over 872 (286-298-288).

Kennegard notched his fourth top-five finish and his fifth top-10 finish, as he now has a 71.52 stroke average in 27 rounds, ahead of the ASU freshmen record set by four-time All-American and 2003 NCAA medalist Alejandro Canizares in 2003 when he posted a 71.65 average in eight events.

Freshman Stephan Gross shot a 9-over 219 (72-72-75) at the par-70 course to tied for 29th. Sophomore Knut Borsheim tied for 32nd at 10-over 220 (70-77-73), sophomore Braxton Marquez tied for 43rd at 14-over 224 (73-78-73) and freshman Cameron Edens tied for 74th at 22-over 232 (76-77-79).

ASU will next compete at the Pac-10 Championships held at the Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif., April 28-30. The Sun Devils finished third at last year's Pac-10 Championships, although only one Sun Devil from that team (Knut Borsheim) is expected to in the lineup this year. ASU last took home a share of the title in 2005 when it tied with Washington but lost on a tiebreaker. ASU has won 11 titles outright in 29 seasons, including seven under 16th-year head coach Randy Lein. Lein, a five-time Pac-10 Coach of the Year at ASU, led the Sun Devils to a record six straight Pac-10 titles from 1995-2000.
