Sports Illustrated Four Players You Should Get To Know (Preseason Issue)Get Acrobat Reader

SUN DEVIL DATA: Has established himself as one of the best post players in the Pac-10 the past two seasons and continues to improve and impress. Work ethic both on the court and in the classroom is off the charts as he is on pace to earn his economics degree sometime in 2008. Easily had the best freshman "surprise" season in the Pac-10 in 2005-2006 and then increased his weight by 20 pounds from the fall of his freshman season (210) to last year (230) and improved on his numbers in all categories. Despite missing all of fall conditioning and most of November in his freshman year after fall surgery to remove a benign tumor in his left leg, he notched Pac-10 All-Freshman honors and since Feb. 4 of that season (past 37 games) he is averaging 12.7 points and 8.8 boards per game. Has twice grabbed 19 rebounds in a game. Played for one of the most successful high school programs in the nation, as his Etiwanda (Calif.) teams were 62-5 his final two seasons under coach David Kleckner. Fellow Division I signees on his prep team included Darren Collison (UCLA), Marcus Carter (Portland State) and David Carter (UC Davis). Has 13 career double-doubles (second-most among active Pac-10 players to Jon Brockman's 18) and 11 career double-figure rebounding games. Has made 176-of-330 (.533) shots from the field in Pac-10 games.

NOT A USUAL HAPPENING: Jeff Pendergraph has a chance to lead ASU in rebounding for the third straight season this year. That has only happened twice in school history, as Ike Diogu led the Sun Devils from 2002-2005 and Al Nealey did it from 1957-60.

SOPHOMORE SEASON (2006-07): Earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 as he led team in scoring (12.1 points per game) and rebounding (9.1)...rebounding average matched second-best by a Sun Devil in the past 26 seasons...averaged 9.6 boards in final 10 games...second in the Pac-10 in field goal percentage (.553), rebounding (8.9 per game), offensive rebounding (3.33) and was fourth in minutes per game (35.5) in league games...led league in offensive rebounding (3.93 per game) in overall games and was second in rebounding (9.1) and field goal percentage (.555)...perfect in eight field goal attempts at Washington State (Jan. 4) and grabbed 19 boards at No. 13 Oregon (Feb. 8) and vs. Colgate (Dec. 19), the most by a Sun Devil since Mike Batiste had 20 vs. Wagner on Nov. 19, 1997...tied for fourth in loop with eight double-doubles.

FRESHMAN SEASON (2005-06): Averaged 14.7 points (second on the team) and led the Sun Devils in rebounds per game (8.0) and double-doubles (four) in final nine games...missed all of fall conditioning and most of November after fall surgery to remove a benign tumor in his left leg...notched Pac-10 All-Freshman honors and was ranked among the freshmen league leaders with 10.9 points per game (second), 6.1 boards per game (third), a 49.4 percent field goal percentage (third) and led all Pac-10 freshman with 0.85 blocks per game...posted 15 double-figure scoring games (eight of final nine) and averaged 13.0 points and 8.3 boards in final six games...finished fourth in the league in field goal percentage (Pac-10 games), shooting 87-of-169 (.515)...started final 22 games and averaged 33.8 minutes in final 11 games...all five double-doubles came in Pac-10 play, including two against Arizona...23 blocks is fifth-best by an ASU freshman, 6.1 boards is fourth-best and 49.4 percent field goal shooting is seventh-best.
