Oregon State's Five Run Ninth Dooms Baseball

April 18, 2008

Box Score

TEMPE, Ariz. -

By Matt Storey

Arizona State gave up a three-run lead going into the ninth and lost to Oregon State 6-4 Friday night in front of a crowd of 3,960 at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark. The loss drops ASU to 30-5, 6-4 in Pac-10 play.

Starting pitcher Mike Leake went eight innings and gave up just one run on five hits while striking out nine, but he did not factor in the decision. Tommy Rafferty blew the save, giving up three runs in the ninth, and Reyes Dorado surrendered two more in the inning to fall to 3-1 on the season.

Oregon State took a 1-0 lead in the second, but Jason Kipnis hit a sacrifice fly in the third to tie the score.

ASU did not get its first hit until the eighth, when the Sun Devils would score three times on RBI singles by Kipnis and Ike Davis and an RBI double by Petey Paramore.

However, the Beavers scored five times in the top of the ninth off Rafferty and Dorado to take a two-run lead. The Sun Devils put their first two runners on in the bottom half of the inning, but they were unable to score.

ASU hosts Oregon State again tomorrow night, with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.
