#1 Baseball Outlasts #8 Michigan 8-4 in Surprise

March 1, 2008

Box Score

TEMPE, Ariz. - Despite trailing for the first time all season, the top ranked Sun Devil baseball team overcame a late deficit to pick up an 8-4 come-from-behind win over #8 Michigan in the Coca-Cola Classic. Brett Wallace was 3-4 at the plate, while Ike Davis shut down the Wolverines from the hill as ASU improved to 6-0 on the year.

Davis went 2.1 innings, allowing only two hits and no runs, picking up his first win of the season. Josh Satow got the start on the hill, lasting 5.1 allowing two runs on six hits with six strikeouts. He did not factor into the decision.

Michigan touched Satow for two in the first, but ASU evened things up in the bottom of the inning. Petey Paramore drew a bases loaded walk to score Brett Wallace and make it 2-1, then Jason Kipnis scored from third on a wild pitch to tie it at 2-2. Kipnis put the Devils up 3-2 in the fourth, sending a sac fly to deep center that scored Jones from third.

The Wolverines would jump back ahead in the seventh, scoring twice to take a 4-3 lead. The Devils would pull back out in front in the bottom of the inning, scoring five runs off Michigan pitchers Michael Powers and Mike Dufek . Marcel Champagnie walked with the bases loaded to score Kipnis and tie it at 4-4. Matt Newman would put ASU up 6-4 with his RBI single that scored Roling and Paramore. Raoul Torrez would add another run, scoring Newman on a blooper to right field to make it 7-4. Brett Wallace made it 8-4 with an RBI single that scored Mike Leake.

The four-run cushion was more than enough for Davis, as he retired Michigan in the ninth to seal the win.

ASU finishes out the Coca-Cola Classic tomorrow afternoon back in Tempe, as they host the Portland Pilots. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.
