Arizona State University is one of four universities recently mentioned by The New York Times as "new academic powerhouses" challenging older institutions in the Northeast and Midwest.

Undergraduate education continues to be a priority for Arizona Sate University. ASU persistence rates for freshman students reached an all time high of 75.4 percent on Main Campus in 1997. ASU student athletes currently have a 90% return rate for the freshman class.

ASU student enrollment is 52% women and 48% men. Although the total enrollment of undergraduate students was 33,497 in fall 1997, 25,958 were full-time undergraduates and about 5,000 students live on campus in residence halls.

ASU seems like a "small" community-based university, when you consider Provost Milt Glick's confirmation of predominantly small class sizes: 60% of the classes have 30 or fewer students and 20% of the classes are 30 to 50 students.

In fall 1997, ethnic minority students made up 21 percent of the undergraduate student body. Six percent are international students representing more than 100 countries.

The Computing Commons offers state-of-the-art software, 24-hour on-line English tutoring to all students.

ASU has an on-campus Student Health Center, which offers fully accredited outpatient health care. Disability Resources for Students offers excellent accommodations, resources and experienced counselors to assist about 1400 students, including students with learning disabilities, be successful students at ASU. Honors College:

Rated in the top eight by Money magazine based on class size, personal attention, independent research opportunities and cost.

Youngest Honors College in the nation to have so many national honors bestowed upon its students.

Enrollment in the Honors College is up 20 percent in fall 1997. This class has more National Merit Scholars and Regents Scholars than ever before.

In 1996, members of the School of Planning and Landscape Architecture won awards from the American Society of Landscape Architects, the Arizona Planning Association and the Valley Forward Association.

U.S. News & World Report continues to place ASU in the top 25 undergraduate business programs in the U.S.

The College won the Outstanding Institution Advising Certificate of Merit from the National Academic Advising Association.

School of Accounting ranked in the top 20 programs by the Public Accounting Report and won the 1995 National Innovation in Accounting Education Award by the American Accounting Association.

Computer world ranked the technology-based Master of Business Administration program in the top 25 in the nation. The ASU MBA evening program was ranked 19th in the nation in 1995 by the US News.
