Sparky's Crew

Tryout Information

When: Saturday, May 10th, Registration - 9:30 AM
Auditions Begin at 10:00 AM-4 PM
Where: PE EAST Building on Campus (near the bookstore)

Tryouts will be closed to the general public. This includes parents, friends, siblings etc. Only those trying out will be allowed into the facility.

What should I expect at auditions?

Auditions will be a One-Day Process: Please bring the ASU Sun Devil Spirit Squad/Sparky's Crew Application, resume (optional), and include a headshot or recent photo, (Photos will not be returned).

Candidates are selected and given different game/event situations in which they need to lead the crowd of spectators in a cheer. Candidates will be observed throughout the clinic on your attitude, ability to learn, enthusiasm, crowd appeal, projection and overall performance.

Interview: Candidates will then be required to answer interview questions and the final team will be posted on the ASU Athletic website on Monday, May 12th by noon.

Conduct: Candidates are expected to encourage and be supportive of other candidates. No food or gum chewing is allowed. No video taping of tryouts is allowed. Auditions will be CLOSED to the public.

What should I wear to auditions? Please wear athletic shorts, solid color shirt and/or ASU Athletic clothing, and athletic shoes. Please plan your audition attire accordingly. Note that a small part of your score is "Overall Image", so it is in your best interest to look game ready.

What should I bring to the auditions? Bring a recent head shot of yourself, Sun Devil Spirit Squad/Sparky's Crew Application. Resumes are optional, but helpful. You may want to bring snacks and water.

Why should I audition for Sparky's Crew?

Sparky's Crew is a part of the Sun Devil Marching Band and under Athletics; one of the nations most highly acclaimed marching organizations. This is a once in a lifetime experience and is a great way to get involved at Arizona State University and be an integral part of the Game Day Experience. Sparky's Crew is a place to continue learning and performing and is a venue to make lasting friendships and memories while impacting the ASU community.

General Information

Squad Composition: 6-10 Individuals (male) Potential returning members must audition each year and are not guaranteed a spot on the team.

Mission: Sparky's crew is dedicated to leading the crowd and adding energy to the atmosphere at Arizona State University athletic events.

In the upcoming season, Sparky's Crew will develop new traditions while honoring the proud, long-standing traditions of the University. They will work closely with the ASU Marching Band and Spirit Group to create a positive and winning atmosphere at all Sun Devil athletic events.

Description: Duties would consist of leading stadium wide chants and increasing crowd participation through the use of signs and megaphones. They would solely be responsible for holding Sparky's Board after touchdowns at football games, assisting with in-game promotions such as throwing out t-shirts, leading the ASU Fight Song, running flags, and pre and post-game traditions such as the Devil Walk.

Appearance: Members must be in good physical condition to properly wear the uniform and to handle the intense physical training and performing while maintaining this fitness level throughout the season.

What is the time commitment?

All of the following listed events are mandatory:

  • At least one camp during the summer for a week
  • Band Camp in Tempe 2 weeks before school starts
  • Fall Spirit Squad/Sparky's Crew rehearsals begin in August through March
  • Practices for 2008-2009: Monday & Wednesday 4-7PM, Friday 4-6pm (Dates/Times subject to change)
  • Practices in the spring for Basketball Season will be determined at a later date. (Usually evenings two to three times a week)
  • Choreography Sessions
  • Home and away football Games
  • Football Bowl Game (if applicable)
  • Pass in Review Performance (November or December)
  • Selected other athletics events
  • Clinics and fund raisers on non-game Saturdays
  • Men's and Women's Basketball games
  • Men's and Women's Basketball Pac-10 Tournaments
  • Men's and Women's NCAA Basketball Tournaments (if applicable)
  • Various campus events including: class appearances, grand openings, recognition ceremonies, etc.
  • Various alumni events including: seasonal kick-offs, Homecoming, dinners, scholarship presentations, etc.
  • Media events including: TV promotions, sponsorship promotions, commercials, photo shoots, etc.
  • Community service events including: community outreach performances at local middle schools and high schools, birthday parties, etc.
  • Practices and performances are EXTREMELY important. If you feel you cannot make the commitment to be at every practice and performance, then you may need to reevaluate your decision to audition.
