In Memory: Pat Tillman

Heather (Mesa, Arizona)
My loving prayers go to the Tillman family for the loss of a great man. I've loved Pat since he was playing in an ASU jersey, he was always one of my favorite players. When I heard he was first going into the Military I wanted to enlist too, but I knew I had to finish school and now that I am close to being done, I am more encouraged to go and fight for what I believe. Just like Pat did. He will always live on inside of us all.

Cliff, San Diego, CA
As a recently retired Naval Officer, I am extremely impressed and amazed the more I find out about this young man. Not only is he a true hero, but he is the epitome role model for all, young and old. He revitalizes my image and hope that there are young people that realize its not about what this country can give you 24/7 but what you can give to this country to keep it strong and free. God bless Pat and his family. Fair winds and following seas.

Ryan White; Dallas, Texas
I remember watching Pat play for the Cardinals when I was younger. He played every down like it was the last, and there was no tomorrow. I admired him for what he accomplished on the field, but most of all I now I have a burning respect that will never fade. I never knew him personally but I wish I had. I read an article every morning before I start my day for inspiration. I read it with the intensions of being one half the man he was. He payed the ultimate price, but it was for the betterment of the USA. That's what I admire most, it wasn't for him, or to seek revenge, it was out of love for the country. That's a hero, and nothing less. The respect and pride that I have when I read about him is so overwhelming that i have to stop and fight off the tears. I hope everyone gets the same feeling when his name is mentioned.

Both my husband and myself are graduates of ASU and have always enjoyed the Sun Devil Football program. Pat Tillman was an exciting player to watch and cheer for. Pat was also an exceptional human being. He exemplified what it means to take the talents God has given each of us and use them to the best of his ability. His family should be proud of the values he embraced and the courage he had to make the choices he did. My family is very humble and thankful for the job he did and job so many are continuing to do so others may know what freedom means.

Bill, Corona California
Wow! Unbelievable! What a tremendous Patriot and Human Being! For those of you who know Pat personally congratulations, you are the richer for it. For those of us who didn't, I wish we had because MEN like this only come around once in a generation. May God Bless his family and the United States of America.

Kristin Bean, Alumni Chapter President, San Diego, CA
My thoughts and prayers, and heartfelt condolences go out to Pat Tillman's family and friends.

This country has suffered a huge loss; not because Pat was a good football player, but because he was truly a great American!

Pat exemplified all that is good about being a Sun Devil and has made each and every alum proud to have been at ASU.

I offer a special thanks to Pat and his fellow servicemen and women for their bravery, sacrifice, and dedication to our country and all it stands for. God bless them all.

There are many unsung heroes, who never get recognized, because they are not popular, famous, from a certain ethnicity, etc. The news media is largely to blame for that.

Famous or not, Pat Tillman was truly a humble and unselfish human being. Many would have taken the career and the money. He gave it all up for love of his country, to keep his family and fellow countrymen safe. There is no greater sacrifice than that of one who gives his life for the greater cause.

Thank you Pat Tillman, and all the military women and men who have come before you and those who will come after you.

With heartfelt sympathy and gratitude I want to say thank you Mr. and Mrs. Tillman for giving the world such a fine son to be an example for the rest of us.

Douglas Vinzant, Champaign, Illinois
In an era where economic, social, political, and military forces frequently collide, individuals are challenged to live lives that exemplify deeper values. In all that he did, Pat remained true to the ideals and beliefs that he held most dear. Though far too short, his was a life well lived. This country has lost a man that would have one day been a great leader--I am certain of that. I offer my deepest sympathies to his family, and my thanks for the son, brother, and husband that you shared with us. He was a truly remarkable human being.

Katie Hedley, Tempe, Az
I feel honored to be at the same school a true hero attended. I will always have a placein my heart for Pat Tillman relating as a sun devil athlete. My prayers are with him and his family.

Sergio Rojas (Gilbert, Arizona)
It is unbelievable who much courage Pat Tillman exemplified. He is a hero, to this country and to myself.

Heather Ludwig (Chicago,IL)
My heart goes out to Pat's family and to all of those service men that have been lost. Pat is one example of the type of great people we have in our country. I am proud not only that I cheered for Pat and his teameates during my years as a SunDevil ('95-'98) but I am also proud to be an American with all our troops.

Smith Family, Phoenix, AZ
It is with such a heavy heart that we write this. As avid Sun Devil fans, we feel that although we never had the privelige of meeting Pat, we have lost a dear friend. He was such an inspiration both on and off the field and accomplished so much more in 27 years than most will in their lifetimes. We are fortunate to have had the chance to watch him play at ASU and in the Rose Bowl. Our prayers are with his family and friends.

"To live in the hearts of others is not to die"--he will always be with us.

A True Hero

You came blazing out with a mane of hair To play on the gridiron battlefield You were aggressive, smart, a talent of fire Many victories you helped to seal

We cheered you on in your maroon and gold Watched you play with all your heart We went with you to 2 bowl games And you became a Pac-10 star

We watched in awe as you turned pro And stunned the critics & naysayers You took the challenge and did your best And became one of the most loved players

Then there was that September day That pushed you into a new fight You walked away from fame and glory And traded in your Red & White

You chose no spotlight, No special requests You became more than a guy who played You showed honor, dignity, courage, and respect And lived that way everyday

You were called to action, to do what was right And we continued to be amazed Your loyalty and dedication Is something we all praised

Then there came that fateful day And the pain we felt was hell But it could be nothing compared to your pain If only you were here to tell

But we shall not put our heads down, or cry in sorrow For your heroism makes us smile And we shall not be defeated in this fight We will battle it every mile

And when we look upon the gridiron field We will remember your memory true For we know that somewhere looking down Is an Angel wearing number 42

Jeff Webb, Gilbert, AZ
I had the honor of attending ASU with Pat. There are so many things I would like to say,...so many emotions I would like to express. However, with the limited amount of space I possess I will sum them up in one thought. Pat inspired those around him, in academics, in sports, in life in general, to be better people. There is no greater compliment I can lay at the feet of any human. Thank you for your influence and love to a very special person. I greive for your loss, but am at the same time a changed person. I thank you for his sacrifice.

Carla Cray, Gilbert, Arizona
First of all, my deepest sympathy goes out to all of Pat Tillman's family and friends.

I did not know Pat personally, and everything I do know I have learned via the t.v., internet and newspapers. Pat Tillman represented what is good and right about living in the USA. He lived his life to the fullest, yet did not take his freedom and liberties for granted. Pat payed the ultimate price for enlisting in the army to serve his country. Pat Tillman represents what we should all want our children (students) to know as "what is good and admirable" in the United States. Pat's character, personality and bravery shall forever be remembered.

Rest in peace... Mr. Tillman... Thank you and rest in peace.

Anthony Chimienti, Folsom, CA
I wanted to say a few words about the absolute true meaning of the word 'hero'. Pat is in my thoughts and prayers, and will live on as a hero in my life forever...

Jamie (Leonardtown, MD)
To a person who gave us an example of how to live life!

George W. Robinson, Mesa, Arizona
Such a waste of a man, his character and what he would have offered to the world. A fellow ASU alumnus, however, your memory will always be there on the field during the season. A one vet to another, you did your duty and now you rest, you earned it.

Cliff Johnston, Scottsdale, AZ
Pat's loss is of a magnitude that can't easliy be understood. He was so much bigger than life and lived his life with such intensity, everyone that witnessed his on-field demonstation of that insensity somehow knew that they could do so much more in their own lives to "raise the bar" to try and somehow emulate a fraction of what he was about.

This is truly a very, very sad day for Arizona, The United States of America, and humanity as a whole. Godspeed Pat.

Carolina C. Butler, Scottsdale, Arizona
It is so sad. Thank you, Pat Tillman, may your sacrifice inspire us all - from our president and our nation's leaders to each American citizen - to do better, to live up to our American ideals. I thank, also, your comrades, our sons and daughters, who are still in the wars, still in military service. Our own family has two. My condolences to your family, to your military comrades, to your countrymen. We all hurt. And thanks for the memories, Pat Tillman, the years you played ASU defense football, your long hair tied back, you were scrappy, always in the play, eager to get the other side. Thanks.

Norm & Betty Gott, Phoenix, Az.
Our Prayers go out to the Tillman family at this very difficult time. Pat was an extra ordinary person, we did not know him other than the press he got while playing for ASU and the Cardinals. Little did we know the true person and we are proud to pay tribute to him and may his courage and desire to make the world a better place to live not be in vain.

Leticia - Nogales, Arizona
We were devastated to hear about the death of such a fine young man.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all..

Mike, Mesa, Arizona
I never knew Pat Tillman, but I sure wish I had.

Pat's death has brought saddness not only to ASU, or Cardinals fans, but to an entire nation - not just for the heroic way in which he defended our freedoms, but because we can easily see his virtues - and we all wish we could be more like him.

Thank you for sacrificing your life so that others may enjoy freedom. Rest In Peace, and may God be with you.

Brenda Mason, Casa Grande, AZ
Pat Tillman personifies integrity, honor, and commitment. He achieved in academics, he thrilled fans on the football field, and protected all of us on the battlefield.

My deepest sympathy is extended to his family and friends. May God give them comfort and peace.

Katie Kuhlman, Estes Park, CO
I would first and formost like to extend my utmost respect to Pat for sering our counrty in our time of need. Is loss is a sad one, and he will forever be remembered for all that he did. I did not know him, but I would like his family and friends to know that I am very sorry to hear about what has happend. Pat Tillman, forever in our hearts!

Bo Steenland, New Cumberland, PA

America, the land of the "free" and the home of the "brave". I know of no other nation or people that can lay claim to these words. Pat Tilman knew well the price of freedom and was willing to defend America. I can think of no other words to describe his actions... "Brave", who was willing to fight and defend America. God Bless him and his family. May God's grace meet them in their grief and sorrow. Blessed are they they mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Andrea, Mesa
Pat Tillman's family should be very proud of the men their sons turned out to be. I have a son and I hope that he is as courageous, smart, and talented as the Tillman brothers. I remember watching Pat play at ASU and as a Cardinal and there was such determination in his eyes. He is a "true hero" and will be forever missed.

mike beauvais, phoenix az
Thank you for defending this great country, you are a great warrior, may your journey to the great spirit be peaceful. You will not be forgotten.

Jason Gellman (Phoenix, Arizona)
Pat Tillman was a unique individual. I cannot say that I knew him at all, but I had talked with him once or twice briefly, while I was working in the ICA building and when he was a junior linebacker. But his loss I felt deeply. One thing that has not been mentioned much about him is how likable and personable he was. He seemed like a guy that would talk about almost anything. He was an interesting guy. You could tell he was smart and thoughtful, but also a guy that could enjoy life. The SI article a few years back highlights how unique he really was.

The sacrifice Pat Tillman made deserves so much respect and admiration, no tribute really does his sacrifice well. He has become the face of those losing their lives and making the sacrifice in the middle east in the war against terrorism and in Iraq. Whatever one thinks about the Bush Administration and its policies, Tillman and all of those over in that part of the world deserve our admiration and respect. His loss is tragic, but his life is one of an honorable and heroic individual who deserves recognition, even though he sought little, if any.

For his contribution, his life and his sacrifice, Pat Tillman deserves a place in the pro and college football hall of fame (he was a pretty darn good safety and excellent college LB). A place in the sun devil "ring of honor" is also appropriate.

The world is a worse place without Pat Tillman. My condolences to his family and friends.

Dave Medaris
It is very refreshing to know that there are still young men like Pat who put their country above themselves. It is hard to find true hero's today, but Pat was someone who American's and people all over the world can respect and honor. There are thousands of other men and women in the armed forces who have given up being with their familys and friends to fight for their country and for the rights and freedoms of those oppressed throughout the world. Let us never forget that the freedom and democracy that we enjoy was paid for in blood by those like Pat.

Brad Rideout, Carlsbad, Ca
As an ASU alumni, I have always been proud that Pat went to ASU. I was lucky enough to meet him at a Tempe hang out a few times and I can say Pat was a class act on and off the field. He represented his family,ASU, and most of all the USA with poise and honor. Pat's passing is a loss to all Americans.

Cherrie Hill
I've had the pleasure of dealing with the Coaches, Players and Staff of the ASU athletic department since 1969. All of those people I've had a business and/or personal relationship with are stand outs but none more than Pat Tillman. Every time I attend an ASU football game, I think of him valiantly running across the field with his long hair flying below his helmet. He had the courage of a lion, the heart of a gladiator and the intelligence of a scholar. Thank God, in this time of self absorbtion, he chose to champion patriotism. All those who have fought to keep our Country Free and gone before, have now installed him as the newest member of their American Soldiers Hall of Fame. May his parents be credited for raising such an outstanding young man; may his wife be blessed for encouraging him to fulfill his mission to protect his country. Pat Tillman ... A True American HERO. Fallen but NOT forgotten.
